Avanti West Coast public ownership begins on 7 March 2027

Avanti West Coast is due to enter public ownership on 7 March 2027, following a Department for Transport announcement on 28 September 2026. Passengers using the West Coast Main Line, including London Euston and Manchester services, should check current journey updates as usual and look for details of timetable changes planned from December 2026.

7 March 2027 is the planned transfer date

The government says it will take control of Avanti West Coast services on 7 March 2027. The transfer has not happened yet: Avanti continues to operate its services until then, and the announcement does not itself change the operator for journeys today.

Avanti runs intercity services from London Euston to destinations including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North Wales. The change therefore concerns passengers travelling across a broad part of the West Coast Main Line.

Timetable changes are planned for December 2026

The Department for Transport has announced timetable amendments beginning in December 2026, before the ownership transfer. Specific journey changes were not detailed in the announcement, so passengers should watch for published timetables before planning trips around a new departure or arrival time.

The government has also set out investment plans: an extra £10 million for power and signalling maintenance by the end of 2027, and £50 million for London Euston over three years. These are planned investments, not evidence that maintenance or station improvements have already been completed. The announcement does not guarantee that passengers will see particular service improvements by a specific date.

Check live journey information before travelling

For trips before the transfer, check the latest train times and disruption notices with the operator or a trusted journey planner. Timetables and service conditions can change independently of the ownership announcement.

The next useful milestone for passengers is the publication of the December 2026 timetable details. Those will show which services are changing and when; the transfer to public ownership is scheduled for 7 March 2027.
